First looks with Mom ...that is definitely a thing.

Why First Looks with the Groom’s Mom Matter Just as Much

— And Why You Shouldn’t Skip Them, Even If He’s Not "Excited" About It

When most people think of “first looks,” they imagine the big emotional moment between a bride and her dad—or the couple seeing each other before the ceremony. And don’t get me wrong, those moments are beautiful and meaningful.

But there’s another first look that often flies under the radar and deserves just as much intention:
The first look between a groom and his mom.

As a wedding photographer in Tampa Bay, I’ve captured dozens of these quiet, powerful moments—and every single time I do, one thing is true: The groom’s mom treasures it more than words can express.

But What If the Groom’s Not Into It?

Listen, I get it. Most grooms aren’t out here begging for extra emotional photo ops. And honestly? That’s okay. This moment isn’t about posing or making a scene—it’s about giving space for something real to unfold.

I’ve found that when we gently prioritize a few quiet minutes for the groom and his mom before the ceremony, it naturally becomes one of the most meaningful parts of the day. Whether it’s a shared laugh, a small hug, or even just a few words passed between them, it’s real. And real is what we’re here for.

The truth is, moms rarely get a moment that’s just theirs with their sons on the wedding day. Between groomsmen photos, ceremony prep, and reception energy, it can all fly by. This first look carves out a space to pause, reflect, and soak in the emotion of what the day means—for both of them.

What These Moments Look Like

They’re not staged.
They’re not forced.
They’re simply timed with intention.

Maybe she helps him pin his boutonnière. Maybe they share a hug in a quiet corner of the getting-ready space. Maybe she just needs one minute to look at her son—really look—and take in who he’s become.

These are the photos that get framed in her house. These are the ones that get pulled out at anniversaries and milestone birthdays. These are the moments that matter.

Prioritizing the Moment in Your Timeline

If you’re planning your wedding timeline now, here’s how you can make this happen:

  • Set aside 5–10 minutes before the ceremony (or before the groom sees the bride)

  • Let it be natural—no pressure, no audience

  • Tell your photographer you want this captured quietly and respectfully

  • Keep it lowkey, but meaningful—no big production required

And trust me: Mom will thank you. Every single time.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms, mamas, ma's, meemaws out there!!
